Orthodontics for Children
The American Association of Orthodontists and our doctors recommend that children have their first orthodontic exam at seven years old. During this visit, our orthodontists and team will evaluate your child’s mouth.
The primary reason for this early exam is to monitor your child’s growth and development. Dr. Togias and his team can detect issues with bite and alignment to prevent the need for additional treatment in the future.
Goals & Benefits of Early Exams
Phase One Treatment
The goal of Phase One treatment is to harmonize the growth of the upper and lower jaws, including creating space in the mouth for all permanent teeth to erupt properly.
Benefits of this early treatment include:
- A reduced risk that teeth will need to be extracted prior to future treatment
- Reduced risk of trauma to protruding teeth
- The teeth and jaws are guided into more favorable positions
- Crowding and spacing issues are more easily managed
- Harmful habits can be corrected earlier
- Improved appearance and self-esteem for children
Signs that your child could benefit from Phase One treatment include:
- Overbites
- Underbites
- Open bites
- Deep bites (where the lower front teeth dig into the roof of the mouth)
- Crossbites
Each child has unique oral health needs. For some children, the treatment produces the best results when it begins before all their permanent teeth erupt. For others, treatment should start after the adult teeth have all fully erupted.
Determining the right time to begin treatment is crucial to helping children enjoy a smile that is stable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. What’s an RPE?
The rapid palatal expander, or RPE, is an oral device that Dr. Togias and associates use to assist the growth of the upper jaw. The most common time to use a palatal expander is in pre-adolescence when the jaw is still developing. If your child has a crossbite or particularly narrow upper jaw, Dr. Togias may recommend a palatal expander to correct the issue.
Here at Manhattan Family Orthodontics, we make customized expanders for every child. The device gently widens the developing upper jaw by applying slight pressure each time your orthodontist makes an adjustment.
Dr. Togias and his team will prescribe and design a custom expansion appliance and treatment plan to ensure your child is comfortable and gets the outstanding results they deserve! Once we reach the desired expansion, your child will need to wear their expander for a while to maintain the results we've achieved and prevent regression.
Orthodontics for Teens
Phase Two Treatment
Although Phase One treatment can prevent the need for extensive future care, Phase Two treatment is usually required to fully align the teeth and jaws.
Our orthodontists will monitor your child’s oral growth and development to determine when phase two treatment should begin.
Phase Two treatment takes place after most or all of the permanent teeth have erupted. This allows the treatment to maximize the appearance and function of the teeth.
During the teen years, our doctors may recommend braces or Invisalign to finish the job of aligning your teen’s smile.
When combined with the results of early treatment, Phase Two treatment is often shorter and requires fewer additional appliances to complete. The length of treatment will depend on your teen’s oral health, speed of tooth movement, and the type of treatment.
After treatment, your teen will get a retainer to help ensure that the teeth remain in their proper positions. To find out more about Phase Two treatment in New York City, New York, schedule an appointment with Dr. Kris Togias or one of our expert orthodontists. Our experienced doctors will help your teen get a healthy, beautiful smile!
Orthodontics for Adults
You are never too old to straighten your teeth! With adult orthodontics in New York City, New York, you can get a beautiful smile at any age.
Believe it or not, your teeth don’t stop moving after your teen years. Teeth that seemed straight and aligned in youth could have shifted later in life. This can lead to jaw pain, trouble brushing, or a smile you’re unhappy with.
If you leave misaligned teeth untreated, you may end up with other dental problems, such as tooth decay and gum disease. You may also notice abnormal wear on the surface of your teeth or that it’s difficult to chew normally.
Dr. Togias and his associates can address these issues and more through orthodontic treatment, giving you the healthy smile you deserve. Your orthodontist will work with you to create a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle and helps you reach your smile goals.
The best part about modern treatment is that you have more discreet options to straighten your smile. Adults can choose Invisalign clear aligners, LightForce clear braces, or InBraces hidden braces for a subtle transformation with clear results.
