What to Expect

If you have never had braces before, it’s natural to wonder what to expect when coming to see an orthodontist.  Below is a basic description of the initial steps our patients take upon choosing Manhattan Family Orthodontics for their care.

1ST IN OFFICE VISIT

We will listen carefully to your concerns regarding your smile and oral health. After the orthodontist performs a thorough evaluation, you will be informed of the course(s) of treatment that will allow you to achieve the smile goals and optimal oral health that you desire. Thereafter, our Treatment Coordinator will address treatment fees, insurance coverage and customized payment options. 45-60 minutes.

2ND IN OFFICE VISIT

Diagnostic records include panoramic & cephalometric x-rays, 3D scans of the teeth and 8 orthodontic photos. These records are used to submit to labs for custom appliances as well as detailed treatment planning. This is something that can be done during the first visit. This appointment is scheduled with our Treatment Coordinator and does not include any doctor time. 20-30 minutes.

3RD APPOINTMENT

This can be done in-office or as a virtual visit. The orthodontist will discuss and clarify the treatment plan based on the records taken. You will have the opportunity to address additional inquiries. 15-20 minutes.

GETTING STARTED

CONTINUED CARE

what-to-expect-continued-careContinued Care: Patient appointments are scheduled between 2-8 weeks apart depending on the orthodontist’s recommendation for maintenance and adjustments. Most visits are in office though some may be virtual. 20-30 minutes.

SMILE COMPLETION

what-to-expect-smile-completionDuring this in office visit, all fixed appliances or attachments are removed, final orthodontic records are taken and retainers are provided. 60-75 minutes.

RETENTION

what-to-expect-retentionThe orthodontist will prescribe full time wear for a period of time. Over the course of 1 year, you will see the orthodontist 3-4 times to ensure proper retention. Thereafter, retainers are to be worn nightly to retain your new smile. 15 minutes.
